The Newtown High School Class of 1984 has started something special with the Newtown Scholarship Association. In advance of the class’s 40th reunion in 2024, reunion committee members decided to start a scholarship for graduating seniors. They set their sights on raising funds among their former classmates, to help Newtown’s young people in perpetuity.

The 2024 Reunion Committee members, including Mary Ellen Babbitt, know every donation is an investment in the young people of Newtown — much like the people who invested in them during their own high school and college years.

“Going into my final semester at Berklee College of Music, the NSA has renewed my scholarship each year and I can’t express how much that has helped my family.” —Theo, NHS graduate

The NHS Class of 1984 scholarships will be awarded with preference to those who have financial need. Special consideration is given to young people who have faced challenges and those who have demonstrated their commitment to community.

“This is inspiring to us,” said Julie Savino, a veteran financial aid administrator and a member of the NSA Board of Governors. “To the students who will receive the scholarship it sends a message from the 1984 graduates, ‘We believe in you and we are investing in your education because we see your promise.’”

What the Class of 1984 started is like a ripple effect from a pebble dropped into the water, reaching beyond a single graduating class, each concentric ripple saying; pay it forward, pay it forward, pay it forward…
